Girls win for Scotland at UK football event

The Girls National Football Championships were held at South Nottinghamshire Academy, Radcliffe-on-Trent on Saturday 22nd November 2014.  SSI Jennifer McCarron reports.

After a few ups & downs with team members dropping out due to various reasons, I managed to put together a strong Girls Scottish team using not only the four Companies within Glasgow & Lanarkshire, but I took advantage of two players from Lothian and Borders Bn.

The team comprised:

Cdt Marshall S                   2 Pl RSB (Motherwell)

LCpl Colquhoun C             C Pl RHF (Easterhouse)

Cdt McCarthy T                 E Pl RHF (Beardmore)

Cdt Wannop A                   A Tp RA (Broomhill)

Cdt Roan S                          1 Tp Scots DG (East Kilbride)

Cdt Watson N                    2 Tp Scots DG (East Kilbride)

Cdt Stewart C                    Lothian & Borders Bn

Cdt McLean T                     Lothian & Borders Bn

The members from Glasgow & Lanarkshire Bn started the journey on Friday 21st Nov. at approx. 1730hrs to head to Beckingham Training Camp where the teams spent time in the cadet accommodation.

It was a journey for the driver of girlie music until we reached the A66 (Penrith – Scotch Corner) where all passengers decided to have a sleep – it was bliss. The stop was at Whetherby Services for a much needed break for the driver. Weather was not too pleasant – wind & heavy rain. Eventually arrived at Beckingham Training Camp at approx 0015hrs were SSI McCarron met up with the Senior Girls Scottish team and the two cadets from L & B for the junior team, both teams eventually got to sleep, then in the normal ACF fashion got up early for breakfast, then waited for 1 1/2 hrs prior to departing for the football area.

The junior team were drawn against ACF counties from:- London, North East, West Midlands, North West and Eastern, playing a total of 5 games scoring a total of 8 goals and only conceding 3 and gaining a total of 13 points with our closest opponents (London) with 10 Points.

All the games were played in great spirit and there was no embarrassment to any of the teams.  The most memorable game must have been against Eastern which we drew 2 – 2 with the equalising goal scored for Eastern by our very own Cdt S Marshall a goal that any top striker would have been proud of.

Cdt McCarthy TCdt Taylor McCarthy of E Pl RHF (Beardmore) said of the event:

National football was a great experience It gives you the chance to get to know people from all different places and makes you work better in your team.  It also gives you the chance to play some great football at all different levels it was a great experience I will never forget and hopefully be able to go back. Winning was the best part of it because it just shows you that hard work will pay off at the end.
