Thinking ahead to summer days …
… and the major event in our training year – Annual Camp.
This year camp is a bit further away from home than usual – over 400 miles from Glasgow and about 60 miles south of London.
Longmoor Camp is just situated off the A3 and is not far from the major military bases around Aldershot and those who have been to Frimley Park will know the area well – the Cadet Training Centre is just 30 minutes away. Camp runs from Sat 8th to Fri 21st July.
The original plan was for the Battalion to go back to Otterburn, but that was not ideal. A recce was then completed at Beckingham Camp in Lincolnshire but again that did not meet the requirements of the Bn, but with the support and assistance of 51 Brigade Longmoor camp was then offered to us – and it meets our requirements.
Longmoor is an old camp but the accommodation is OK. Most cadets will be accommodated in blocks of 50 beds over two floors. The number of cadets in each room is around 10. There are lockers provided. Toilets and ablutions are located on each floor.
The camp has better facilities than many we have been to with a large dining room and canteen.
In camp training facilities includes an assault course, 25m barrack range, a 10 lane DCCT, and a 4 lane indoor range for air rifle and .22. There is a large gymnasium, plenty of classrooms and a large indoor training building which can easily hold more than a company.
The camp has lots of outdoor space and there are dry training areas and ranges just out the back gate.
There is a Domino’s Pizza, a chippy and Indian and Chinese takeaways all within 3 miles of camp. There is also a McDonalds – a 5 minute drive in a different direction – and a local Tesco.
Work has already started on training programmes to make it a worthwhile and enjoyable camp – so get the dates into your diary.
